Autonomous vehicles in Florida · Updated October 2026

Cybercab is coming. Tampa Bay is already driverless.

The future is here, and Autonomy is ready to help businesses make the most of it. Autonomous ride-hail service is no longer something happening “out west.” Tesla robotaxi rides are operating on Tampa streets today, and Cybercab is in production. Here is what has actually happened, what hasn’t yet, and what it means for businesses on the Gulf Coast.

QUICK TAKE FOR BUSINESS OWNERS

Driverless vehicles are now part of the Tampa Bay road mix. The way vehicles are branded, seen and remembered is changing with them. You don’t need a robotaxi to get ready. You need a brand that looks like it belongs in that future.

OCT 9, 2026 · TEXAS

Texas DMV registrations of purpose-built Cybercabs rose from 169 to 319, the biggest single batch so far. Together with about 420 Model Y robotaxis, that’s about 739 Tesla robotaxis registered in Texas. Austin is still the only city with paid Cybercab rides, and registered doesn’t mean carrying riders.

NHTSA gives Tesla a 30-day extension in audit AQ26002. Tesla’s sworn answers on how it self-certified the Cybercab to federal safety standards are now due Friday, October 30, 2026 (Tesla had asked for November 20). It is a date to watch, not a launch date.

Tesla’s Cybercab is still commercial only in Austin after its first month. Texas has now authorized 169 for commercial use, up from 45, and CNBC names Florida among the next markets because of its warm weather and AV-friendly rules. Tampa, Orlando and Miami already have Tesla Robotaxi rides in the Model Y, but Cybercab passenger service isn’t live in Florida yet. NHTSA is still auditing the no-steering-wheel design.

02 / Signal vs. noise

What’s not confirmed yet.

Kept separate on purpose. These are open questions, reports and estimates, not facts.

SIGNAL · ON THE RECORD

  • Tesla Robotaxi rides in part of Tampa, using Model Y, since July 2026
  • Tesla Robotaxi rides (Model Y) also in limited areas of Miami and Orlando since July 2026
  • Cybercab in production; public Cybercab rides in limited areas of Austin only, since September 3, 2026
  • Florida law has allowed fully driverless operation since 2019

NOISE · NOT CONFIRMED

  • No announced date for Cybercab service in Tampa. Cybercabs have been spotted on Tampa-area roads by residents, but Tesla has not announced Cybercab passenger service here. (Community reports only: r/tampa community thread (Aug–Sep 2026).)
  • Federal rules are still catching up. NHTSA has proposed (Jun 2026) removing the brake-pedal requirement for vehicles never meant to be driven by a human, but existing standards remain in force. NHTSA also opened an audit (AQ26002) on September 3, 2026 into how Tesla certified the Cybercab to federal safety standards. Tesla’s answers to NHTSA’s follow-up order (Special Order) were first due September 30. NHTSA then gave Tesla a 30-day extension, so its sworn answers are now due October 30, 2026. That is a date to watch, not a launch date. The audit is a review, not a recall, and the outcome could affect how fast Cybercab scales nationally. (NHTSA (Jun 25, 2026); NHTSA audit query AQ26002 (Sep 3, 2026); The Auto Wire (Sep 30, 2026); TeslaNorth (Oct 8, 2026).)
  • Production volume. Tesla lists installed Cybercab capacity of more than 125,000 vehicles a year but says that is not the current production rate. Public estimates beyond that are speculation. (Tesla Q2 2026 Update (Jul 22, 2026).)
  • Fleet sales and wrapping. Whether Tesla will sell Cybercabs to local businesses, or allow third-party wraps on them, is unknown. No pricing, terms or policies have been published.

03 / What it means

What it means for Southwest Florida businesses.

01

The road is getting more crowded with “blank” vehicles

Robotaxi fleets bring more identical, unbranded-looking vehicles onto the road. Against that backdrop, a bold, well-designed wrap on your van or truck stands out more, not less.

02

Your fleet is your billboard, for people and cameras

Autonomous vehicles navigate with cameras and sensors, and so do the growing number of dash cams and phones on the road. Clean, high-contrast, readable branding (big logo, short message, clear phone/URL) works for every viewer.

03

Being “future-ready” is a brand position

Customers notice businesses that look modern. A fleet that looks like it belongs in 2030 tells customers you’re the forward-thinking choice in Venice, Englewood or Port Charlotte, long before a robotaxi ever reaches Sarasota County.

04

Plan now, wrap smart

  • Wrap what you drive today. Vans, trucks, pickups and EVs.
  • Build a fleet design system. Logo placement, colors and a layout that scales from one vehicle to twenty, and to whatever you drive next.
  • Choose removable, premium 3M film. It protects resale value and makes rebranding or swapping vehicles easy.
  • Think EV. Many businesses are moving to electric vans and cars. A wrap is a fast way to make a new EV unmistakably yours.

04 / Ready

Ready when the future pulls up.

Autonomy is owned by a Florida native and 3M Certified Installer who has followed autonomous vehicles from the start. Autonomy’s long-term goal is to help businesses, and eventually autonomous fleets, look their best on Florida roads. Today, that means wrapping your work vehicles so they’re ready for what’s next.

Cybercab Tampa FAQ

Quick answers.

Short, sourced answers. Facts as of October 3, 2026.

Is Tesla’s Cybercab available in Tampa?

As of October 3, 2026, no. Tesla’s Cybercab passenger rides are available only in limited areas of Austin, Texas (since September 3, 2026). Tesla’s Robotaxi service does operate in part of Tampa using Model Y vehicles (since July 2026).

Are driverless cars legal in Florida?

Yes. Under Florida Statute §316.85, a fully autonomous vehicle may operate without a human operator physically present.

Can I wrap a robotaxi or autonomous vehicle?

Autonomous vehicles depend on cameras and sensors that must never be covered, so any wrap has to keep sensor areas clear and follow the owner’s or manufacturer’s rules. Today we focus on the vehicles businesses drive now, and we design fleets to be ready for what’s next.

Does Autonomy work with Tesla?

No. Autonomy is an independent business and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Tesla, Inc.
